International Women’s Day shouldn’t be the only day of the year we celebrate women...   Here at Black Heart, we’re big on female empowerment every day! This year’s IWD theme is #EmbraceEquity. It’s important to identify the difference between equity and equality, because without one, we cannot have the other.    Equity is the quality of being fair and impartial, it recognises that there is work to be done to reach equality.  Black Heart Equestrian fully welcomes the #EmbraceEquity movement.

Equity, Equality and Equestrian Sport

Women equestrians are pretty fortunate compared to women in many other sports. Equestrian sport is the only Olympic sport where men and women compete on equal terms, with equal prize money and equal access to all competitions.  Most of the teams at major competitions such as the Olympics are mixed.

With regards to equity in equestrian sport studies have shown that, for the most part, men and women have the same opportunities to win.  There may still be some disparity in opportunities and sponsorship for riders depending on gender however the good news is that women have as good a chance of winning an olympic medal as men!

Additionally, equestrian sport has many women in high profile positions, recipients of top awards such as Sports Personality of the Year and the current world number one dressage rider is 26 year old Charlotte Fry!

Girl-Spo

Here at BHE we have many girl-spirations and along with riders Charlotte Dujardin and Lottie Fry, our all time Girl Boss is 8-time Paralympic gold medalist Sophie Christansen.  Sophie is the absolute heroic representation for disabled and able-bodied women in sport.  The huge range of amateur and professional women riders across all the different disciplines provide wonderful role models for younger riders.

IWD2023 - How to Get Involved

  • Raise awareness - share any information about IWD across social media and use the hashtag #IWD2023
  • Educate yourself - the more we know, the more we can spread the word!
  • Get involved - supporting women led businesses and charities

Alongside our brand goals, we have a supportive team of women driving BHE including our founder, international dressage rider Erin Williams. We understand how important it is to feel supported within society.  Our ethos is to empower and embrace women in the equestrian community, breaking stigmas around body image and helping others feel confident and happy in their skin.
If you have any suggestions for how we can be even better and further support women, get in touch, we would love to hear from you!
